English time
- Our aim is to expose all of the children at our school to English on a daily basis from the day they arrive to the day they leave. We focus on creating a nurturing, fun and enjoyable learning environment by integrating roleplay, games, music and popular stories into our classes. As a result the children look forward to our classes and the weekly English assembly because they promote active, playful and fun English learning.
- We place great emphasis on building the children’s confidence in using English and helping them to master basic English listening and speaking skills with the correct pronunciation. Through entertaining songs (e.g. Do you like broccoli ice-cream? , Can you run?), chants and games we drill vocabulary and sentences so that the children are constantly increasing their bank of English words and phrases. The end result being that by the time they finish K3 they are able to converse in English and take part in simple discussions.
- We frequently review and adapt our English curriculum and activities to keep them relevant and engaging. For example, we have recently changed our phonics curriculum to the Oxford ‘Get, Set, Go!’ phonics programme, which won the award for ‘Excellence in Course Innovation’ at the 2018 British Council ELTons Awards. The ELTons are the only international awards that recognise and celebrate innovation in English Language Teaching. ‘Get, Set, Go!’ phonics is one of only a handful of phonics programmes that has been designed specifically for young children learning English as a second language. It aims to help children to build a solid foundation of language and phonics skills in kindergartens, and facilitate the development of their speaking, reading and writing skills.
- Many of the stories covered within our curriculum are well-known bestsellers and much loved by children around the world. For example ‘The Gruffalo and ‘Room on the Broom’ written by Julia Donaldson (the 2011-2013 Children’s Laureate) and ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ and 'Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you see?' by Eric Carle, have all won numerous awards. We are confident that the enjoyment and enthusiasm shown by the children for these stories during our English lessons and assemblies will continue out of the classroom and into their homes and libraries. We hope that this will instill a lifetime love of books and reading.
- We are proud to provide the children with a strong foundation in English, to set them up for Primary School and beyond.
